Handback for iPhone

A sealed record of the hire car, before you drive away.

Handback walks you round the car with your iPhone, square by square, when you collect it and when you return it. If a damage charge arrives weeks later, you have dated evidence to answer it.

Coming soon to the App Store. iPhone with iOS 17 or later. Screens show the app's illustrated sample rental.

A sample rental in Handback: pickup and return scans sealed, and a comparison showing two squares that look different.

Damage charges arrive after you've gone home

Weeks later

The letter often comes once the car has been cleaned, repaired or hired out again.

Photos don't line up

A camera roll of quick snaps rarely shows the same panel, from the same angle, at both ends of a hire.

When was it taken?

It's hard to show a photo is from the moment you collected the car, and hasn't been changed since.

How it works

  1. Walk round at pickup

About 250 squares across 10 panels. The app shows where to point and tells you when each square is captured.

  2. Sealed on your phone

The record is locked on your phone, so any later change to the photos can be detected. Our server adds the time when you next open Handback online.

  3. Walk round again at return

Even if nobody is there to check the car in.

  4. If you're charged, compare and reply

See the changed squares side by side, export a PDF evidence pack, and start from a drafted letter to the rental company.

If a charge arrives

After your return scan, Handback lines up the two scans square by square and marks what looks different. A difference isn't proof of damage, and some will be dirt or water, so you check each one.

  • The car laid flat, panel by panel, at pickup and at return
  • Squares that look different marked in amber
  • Close-ups you took of any damage you spotted
  • When each record was made, and when our server first received it
  • A record code anyone can check at handback.tech/verify
  • A drafted letter to the rental company, for you to edit and send
The comparison screen: a square from the left side at pickup and at return, with a new mark outlined in amber.

Your photos stay on your iPhone

Our server receives a fingerprint of each record (a hash), its signature, your phone's public key, and basics such as pickup or return, the time, how much of the car was covered and the app version. Never the photos, video, your location, your name or which company you hired from. This site sets no cookies and uses no analytics.

What Handback isn't

Handback isn't insurance and isn't legal advice. It helps you collect and present evidence; the rental company, your card issuer, an ombudsman or a court decides the outcome.

Questions

How long does a scan take?

A few minutes for a typical car. Walk slowly about an arm's length away, and hold the phone up high for the roof, or skip it if you can't reach.

What if there's no signal in the car park?

Scan anyway. The record is sealed on your phone straight away. It gets its online timestamp the next time you open Handback with a connection.

Will the rental company accept it?

We can't promise that. Handback gives you organised, dated evidence and a clear way to present it. What happens next is up to the company, or whoever reviews the dispute.

Which iPhones work?

Any iPhone that runs iOS 17. Pro models with LiDAR also measure the car's panels directly.
